Bupa Cube

Bespoke Frameless Illuminated Acrylic Signage Project by Mercury & Phillips Signs

Mercury & Phillips Signs were commissioned with the task of designing and manufacturing a large, internally illuminated, external five sided acrylic cube which was to be face decorated with a corporate logo.

The brief was concise but challenging not just due to the shear scale of the cube, but also by the client request for the cubes external decoration to be frameless. Challenge accepted!

Project Lead Steve Evers spent considerable time sourcing a selection of seemingly appropriate base materials, with samples being obtained and passed to Evan Godfrey, Production Manager for testing.

The successful material was 30mm Spectrum LED Opal Acrylic (supplied by www.perspex.co.uk) for its durability and ability to give the vinyl decoration a smooth, sleek visual therefore making the cube look solid.

The internal illumination was achieved by the construction a secondary cube which sat within the original. Manufactured using Aluminium composite Material it housed the IP67 rated white LEDs and 12-volt drivers, allowing a rate of 5000 lumens per square metre (supplied by www.sign-tec.co.uk).

An access panel was constructed to the top of the external cube to allow access to the electrics for maintenance purposes.

Finally the whole structure was lowered by Hiab onto M20BZP threaded studs where is was bolted down and the electrics connected to the electrical supply.

Steve Evers said of the project; this job really tested our brains, with the size and visual needs of the client being at the forefront of our minds. The result was worth the effort as another successful bespoke product left Norfolk – well done Team!
